When the United States Constitution was signed, it's framers had just fought a war for their liberties against the British government only a few years earlier. This Revolutionary War was not fought with spears and clubs, but with rifles and cannons.

Through their first hand experience, our founding fathers foresaw that an armed people stood a much better chance of remaining a free people and created the 2nd amendment. The purpose of the 2nd amendment was not to ensure that the new American citizenry would always remain able to hunt or defend themselves from criminals (although these are benefits of the 2nd amendment), but rather to enable the people to protect themselves and have the tools necessary to institute a new government should their own government ever become oppressive.

The problem with gun laws is not only are they in flagrant violation to the letter of the law and spirit of the 2nd amendment, but they also only restrict law abiding citizens. The idea in Washington that stricter gun legislation would reduce violent crime is ludicrous. A criminal is not hindered by law until they are caught. If a criminal is willing to break the law to commit a robbery or murder, they also would not have a problem breaking the law in order to obtain the gun to do it with.

Therefore, I am opposed to ALL gun legislation that gets in the way of a law abiding citizens from owning guns. I also actively support legislation such as Missouri Senate Bill 613 (The Second Amendment Preservation Act), which nullifies any law the federal government attempts to enforce in Missouri.
